Although there are few big animals, like the elephants and giraffes which live in Africa, Amazônia is very special because of the huge variety of animals that live there. Much of this variety is in the insect world – scientists estimate that a single hectare of rainforest provides a home to over 50,000 different types of insects and spiders – with over a million different species in all of Amazônia. By comparison, there are 20,000 species in all of Britain, and even fewer species in New Zealand.
